Prime Time for Leadership

We who were spared the scourge of terrorism have been forever changed. Our hearts are heavy for those who were lost, and those who lost. Our souls have encountered stark reminders of our own mortality. Symbols of freedom and power lie in rubble, covering human bodies that speak to us of the terrible cost of terrorism. Sounds of aircraft, once symbolic of America on the move, signal reminders of horror. Official reassurances convey confidence, tinged with fear. We are grappling with the questions of Why? and, Could it happen again? Perhaps the blessing in our suffering is that we are pressed to assess the purpose of our individual and collective lives in the midst of chaos.

Terrorism must be stopped. Today, as our World Leaders prepare a response to the hideous acts of terrorism upon the United States on September 11, 2001, assurance must be given that retaliation must be only toward the perpetrators. Revenge is similar to terrorism because it emanates from a consciousness of hate. Discerning Leadership will attempt to stop evil without causing the suffering and death of innocent people. We must not become that which we abhor. We must act responsibly to eliminate terrorism while protecting the freedom for which so many have suffered and died.

The freedom of people of all races, ethnicities, and religions to live, learn, work, and pray in peace is the greatest power of the United States. Our love for humanity must remain unceasing; our actions against evil must be effective; and our devotion to freedom for all people must never wane.

Today, from every location, we join in a Meditation for Peace. We ask that our World Leaders be filled with wisdom. As we mourn those who are no longer among us, may we be united in our desire for the human family to live together in peace.

You are also invited to join in the International Peace Meditation held the first Sunday of every month. Peace in our world begins with peace in our hearts. 'Let everything you do be done for Love.'
